Tell us the name of your company and briefly describe your business and product.

The Sweat Club is a monthly subscription for women’s activewear. We make the best activewear on the planet, made from recycled plastic water bottles.

What inspired you to start your business?

We originally drafted the concept for a subscription based platform for activewear and launched it, but we quickly realized that we were only contributing to the fast fashion world that is stocking our landfills with non-biodegradable goods.

After a ton of research, we found that we can bring change to the activewear community by providing eco-friendly and sustainable technical apparel made from recycled water bottles and fishnets. We found a way to turn one of the worlds landfilling products into renewable resources that are sweat wicking, squat proof, recycled, 4-way-stretch and feather soft. Instead of taking the easy route and making average activewear, we are replacing synthetic fabrics with renewed materials such as water bottles, that we think the world has been crying out for - something better.

Every business is on a mission. What is your mission as it relates to The Sweat Club?

Our mission is to be the first 100% renewable activewear brand on the planet. Our team is passionate about changing the industry for good and providing our customers with the highest quality sustainable fashion while educating them on the harmful effects of fast fashion, water bottles and other non-biodegradable goods.

What accomplishment are you most proud of so far?

I’m so proud of hitting our first major milestone of $100,000 in sales within our first 3 months. It’s so rewarding to see hard work pay off and the fact that it took off so fast validated that we were on the right path.

How did you get your first customers and how long did it take?

My first sales came from a giveaway campaign I launched on Instagram. I contacted some influencers and bloggers and asked them to promote my campaign. They liked the idea because it was a good way for them to provide value to their followers. It took us 10 days to get our 1st customer and after that it was a snowball effect.

Why is it necessary for you to have a subscription billing model and not just one-time purchases?

There are so many reasons to build a business around subscription. First off, it guarantees that I’ll have repeat customers every month which makes my business more stable and profitable. Secondly, my customers really love getting surprised with new outfits. Plus it allows me to build a community around my brand.

What made you decide on Subbly to support your business instead of something else?

I honestly first spent $15,000 trying to build a custom technology solution myself and that failed. So I googled subscription ecommerce software and Subbly popped up. I contacted support and got on a call with Stefan (Subbly CEO). He then made me realize that I didn’t have to build everything myself and that he was rolling out a new feature in the months to come.  The main feature to why I signed up for Subbly was the survey builder. This allowed me to collect customer data using a style quiz and create a personalized shopping experience.

What is your advice for someone who is just starting a subscription business?

The best advice I can give is when starting a subscription business, make sure you have enough cash. Most entrepreneurs ignore the cost it takes to acquire a new customer and to factor in churn. So to sum it up - make sure to pay attention to cash flow and customer acquisition costs.
