About Mama Box

Sourcing all their products from Australian brands, Mama Box provides a full range of products delivered on a monthly basis to hundreds of expectant mothers around the country.

Choosing a subscription model was a natural option for founders Kelsea Powell and Emma Champ from the start.

It made complete sense — with a pregnancy lasting a defined period of time and entailing a well-understood set of needs around health, encouragement and well-being, expectations for subscription duration and product standardization could be defined well in advance.

“WooCommerce became quite difficult to manage with multiple updates to plugins, and some would then stop working! We also had a lot of issues with WooCommerce payments — one month had so many errors we had to manually process them."

The Challenge

Starting their business on WordPress and WooCommerce, the founders quickly became aware of the limitations that would affect their future efforts. The hunt was on for a better solution.

As WooCommerce and the other plugins Mama Box relied on for basic subscription functionality updated at different rates, they’d stop working without any warning.

Plus, ongoing issues with WooCommerce Payments mean the founders had to devote more time than necessary to manually processing transactions.

What Kelsea and Emma needed for Mama Box was an all-in-one solution that would allow them not just to optimize the current inefficiencies in their business, but provide them with a frictionless framework to grow.

The Solution

As a subscription business geared at pregnant women, Kelsea and Emma felt an unspoken responsibility to create a service that minimized stress while delighting people with a lot to manage through top-notch products.

An all-in-one platform that would handle everything from her stably and at a fair price was exactly what they needed, and exactly what they got.

Starting by migrating their first batch of subscribers from WooCommerce and transferring their website from WordPress, a process facilitated by Subbly’s customer success team who handled all the data and behind-the-scenes work, Kelsea and Emma began the process of switching to Subbly in full.

"The lack of support from WooCommerce also made us want to do the move!”

The Results

With a mid-five figure ARR already in the bag before migrating, Mama Box had proven their potential to become a subscription success story for the ages. Subbly helped them take it to the next level.

It’s rare to see a subscription business whose offering is designed to last for a specific period of time grow so significantly in such a small time. Since switching to Subbly, Mama Box's subscriber count has more than tripled, with a corresponding boost in MRR to back up their results.

With more time to focus on growing their business on their hands,  Kelsea and Emma are ready for a new era of empowering pregnant women to experience comfort and destress during the most physically demanding time of their lives — and with Subbly by their side, it’s going to be equally as comfortable and stress-free for them too.

"We've had countless long nights, days, and months to perfect everything from the products in our boxes down to the detail of how each box is presented, in order to create a brand that not only gives you amazing, useful products but uplifts each Mama on those struggling days we all go through in pregnancy."
