How much does it cost to start a subscription box?

By Stefan Pretty, founder and CEO of SubblyUpdated · 7 min read

The short answer

In the US, a first run of 50 boxes costs about $2,430 on a lean budget and about $6,910 on a comfortable one, before the store. Most of it is the boxes: products, packaging and postage come to about $29 a box. Then come your first subscribers, your brand and photos, and business setup. Store software adds about $25 to $140 a month plus fees on each order. Taking pre-orders before you buy stock covers much of the first batch.

What a first run of 50 boxes costs

Two budgets for the same $45 box. The lean one is packed at home with plain boxes, phone photos and a small ad test. The comfortable one adds printed boxes, a designer, a photographer, a trademark and a bigger marketing push. Both leave out the store, which is covered below.

Launch budgets for 50 subscription boxes

Business setup: LLC, local licence, registered agent$167$292
Insurance: first month, or a year up front$42$500
Brand: logo, domain, email$18$417

Gifted boxes and creator posts$144$767
Replacements for damaged boxes$29$58
Accounting and helpdesk software$0$48

The setup figures use the average LLC filing fee across states ($132): it ranges from $35 in Montana to $500 in Massachusetts, and California adds an $800 franchise tax from the first year. An EIN is free from the IRS, and a seller's permit is free in most states. Insurance is the median for an ecommerce business's general liability policy, which usually includes product liability. Expect more for food, cosmetics, supplements or children's products.

What each box costs to make and send

Packaging: plain mailer, sticker, card, tissue
$4.35
Postage: 1 lb, USPS Ground Advantage
$9.47
Card fee (2.9% + 30¢)

$14.57

That $14.57 has to pay for the store, marketing and your time. Printed boxes with custom tissue cost about $8.40 to $10 each at 50 units and about $5 to $6.50 at 250, so branded packaging takes about $4 to $6 more out of every box until you order in bulk. Postage is the cost most first budgets get wrong: the commercial USPS rate for a 1 lb box runs from $8.01 to $11.22 depending on distance, and 2 lb costs up to $13.42.

Not everyone renews. Across Subbly stores in 2024, curated boxes lost a median of 7.1% of subscribers each month, so plan your second order for a few fewer boxes than your first.

Should I pack the boxes myself or use a fulfilment company?

At 50 boxes, packing them yourself is usually cheaper. A fulfilment company (a 3PL) usually charges a setup fee of $300 to $1,000, about $3.25 to pick and pack an order plus $0.30 to $0.75 for each extra item, and $20 to $40 a month for each pallet it stores. Most also have a monthly minimum, typically $250 to $750, which on its own works out to $5 to $15 a box at 50 boxes. Fulfillrite, a 3PL, says many subscription brands switch at around 150 to 200 boxes a month.

Packing at home needs little more than a shipping scale and free label software such as Pirate Ship, which sells USPS labels at commercial rates with no monthly fee.

How much should I budget to get my first subscribers?

Expect your first subscribers to come from people who already know you: a waitlist, friends, your community and your own posts. Paid ads are a test at this stage. Across the Meta ad accounts Triple Whale tracked from August 2025 to July 2026, the median cost per purchase was $38.99, so $300 buys around 8 customers. Meta also needs about 50 conversions in a week before it stops testing who to show an ad to, which a launch budget rarely reaches.

Gifting boxes to small creators costs the box itself, about $28.82 here. Many creators with 1,000 to 10,000 followers accept a gifted product, and a paid post from them usually costs $100 to $300. Not every gifted box turns into a post: in one survey of marketers, 61% said fewer than half the creators they sent products to posted about them.

What does the store cost?

The usual routes for a new box, priced for a year of 50 subscribers at $45 a month (600 charges). Card processing is left out, since it's about the same everywhere (2.9% + 30¢ on a US card).

Store costs by route for a year of 50 subscribers
RouteMonthly costFees on each orderFirst year
Shopify with a subscription app$29 to $39 for Shopify Basic, plus $0 to $99 for the appNone with Shopify Payments and a free app. Recharge Starter adds 1.49% + 19¢About $350 with Shopify's free Subscriptions app, to $2,170 with Recharge
Squarespace Core$29 to $39NoneAbout $350 to $470
Cratejoy marketplace$24.991.25% + 10¢, plus a 15% referral fee on first orders and renewals from the marketplaceAbout $4,750 if every subscriber came through the marketplace

Each route suits a different box. Shopify with its free Subscriptions app is the cheapest way to add a simple subscription to a Shopify store, while features like build-a-box need a paid app (Appstle's plan with it is $30 a month). Squarespace sells one subscription product per checkout, with nothing else in the cart, and takes payment through Squarespace Payments or Stripe. Cratejoy's fees are the highest, but its marketplace brings shoppers who are already looking for boxes.

Paying someone to set up the store adds to this. Store setup services on Shopify's partner directory start at around $100 to $1,500, and Shopify puts a custom build at $2,000 to $20,000 or more.

What costs do first-time founders forget?

  • Sales tax in states that count transactions. You collect sales tax in your own state from the first sale. Most states only make you collect it from out-of-state customers once you sell $100,000 a year there. Some, including New Jersey, also count 200 transactions, and a monthly box is 12 transactions a year, so 17 subscribers in one of those states can be enough. Check each state's own rules.
  • Waiting for your money. Stripe pays out your first payments 7 to 14 days after the first charge, so stock, packaging and postage are paid for before the money arrives.
  • Refunds and disputes. Stripe keeps its fee when you refund an order. A dispute costs $15, and another $15 if you contest it and lose.
  • Postage changes. USPS added a temporary 8% to parcel prices from April 2026 and a holiday surcharge from 4 October, both running to 17 January 2027.
  • Getting products to you. Freight from your suppliers, and spare stock for boxes that arrive damaged.

Can I start a subscription box with no money?

Close to it, if you sell before you buy. Put up a page that shows the box and takes pre-orders or builds a waitlist, then order stock once enough people have committed. Keep the first box simple and buy small quantities. Free tools cover most of the rest at the start: Canva for a logo, Pirate Ship for postage labels, Wave for accounting and Klaviyo's free plan for up to 250 email contacts. Most store platforms offer a free trial, so you can build the page before you pay for one.

How much should I charge?

Work back from the full cost of one box, postage and fees included. In the example above, $30.43 of a $45 box goes on making and sending it, which leaves about a third of the price. Cratejoy's pricing guide suggests a margin of at least 30%. Check each box still earns enough once a few subscribers cancel every month. Prepaid plans of 3, 6 or 12 months, at a small discount, bring cash in early. Our subscription box pricing guide goes through it step by step.

What it costs on Subbly

Subbly is a store platform with subscriptions, build-a-box, a customer portal and growth tools built in, so there are no apps to add. The Subbly plan is $69 a month, and transaction fees are 1% + 12¢ on Stripe or 1.25% on other gateways, on top of the card fee. For the same year of 50 subscribers that comes to about $1,170: more than Shopify with a free subscription app, and less than Shopify with Recharge. There are no setup fees or contracts.

Your agent builds the store from a description and works on credits. Typical costs:

A page$10 to $50A landing page or a build-a-box flow
Your whole store, first version$100 to $250Designed around your brand, checkout included

New stores get hundreds of dollars in free credits during setup, enough for the first version of the store. Launch Club, a free live session every weekday, helps with the rest.

“Before I used Subbly, the lowest price I had been quoted by web designers was $1600 and that was just for the landing page. I have spent far, far less than that. AND they host my site and keep track of my sales, etc. I can't believe how much I get for what seems like very little money.”
