Can Claude build and run my online store?
By Stefan Pretty, founder and CEO of SubblyUpdated · 3 min read
The short answer
Claude can design a store and write its code, and through connectors it can manage a store that runs on a commerce platform, but it doesn't host stores or take payments itself. Shopify's connector, for example, can start a store from a description, add products, update stock and create discount codes, while refunds, payments and taxes stay in Shopify's admin. Claude for Small Business adds ready-made workflows, such as a weekly sales brief, that wait for your approval before anything sends or pays.
What Claude can build
- In chat. Claude makes artifacts, which can be single-page websites, and you can publish one so anyone with the link can use it. That's good for a landing page or a waitlist, but an artifact can't take payments.
- In Claude Design. Designs and prototypes, which Wix's "Send to Wix" can publish as a live page connected to Wix Stores. Finishing that setup needs a coding agent such as Claude Code.
- In Claude Code. A full custom storefront, written as code. You still need somewhere to host it (Claude has Netlify and Vercel connectors), a payment provider such as Stripe, and a way to handle tax, orders and shipping.
So Claude can produce the store's pages and code, but the parts that take money, calculate tax and track orders come from a commerce platform or payment provider you connect.
Can Claude manage my Shopify store?
Yes, within limits. Shopify's official connector for Claude reads your orders, analytics, products, customers and inventory. It can create and update products, set stock by location, create collections and percentage-off discount codes, and edit pages and menus. It can also start a store: describe your business, review storefront previews and claim one as a Shopify store on a normal Shopify plan.
It asks you to confirm before changing pages, menus and metadata. It can't edit or publish your live theme, change your plan, payments, taxes or domain, or refund, cancel or capture orders. It changes items one at a time, so a large batch can stop partway. In Shopify's own words, "it doesn't replace your Shopify admin."
Wix has a similar connector, which can create sites, add products, update prices, apply discounts and manage orders.
Can Claude handle payments and refunds?
Through a payment provider's connector, partly. Stripe's connector can read your account and create products, prices, coupons, invoices and subscriptions. Refunds and payments out of your account need a person to confirm them through an approval link, which expires after 24 hours, and Stripe recommends turning on tool approval in Claude too. From 31 October 2026 it only accepts sign-in through OAuth or Stripe's agent API keys, not your full secret key. Square and PayPal also have connectors.
In Claude you can set each connector tool to always allowed, needs approval or blocked, and team owners can set those limits for everyone.
What is Claude for Small Business?
A package of connectors and ready-made workflows, launched in May 2026 and expanded in September with 43 workflows and integrations that include Shopify, Stripe, Square and Wix. Examples include a Monday brief of cash, last week's sales and overdue invoices, and drafting a reorder before a bestseller sells out. It's available on every paid Claude plan. By default, Claude does the work and waits for your approval before anything sends, posts or pays.
What should I still do myself?
Anything involving money or a promise to a customer: refunds, payouts, prices, policies and what goes out in your name. Check changes before they go live, start with read-only access, and widen it once you trust the results. On Subbly
How Subbly works with AI
On Subbly the agent is part of the store platform rather than connected to one. You describe what you want and it builds and changes the storefront, pages, products, plans, bundles, stock and coupons. Changing the checkout and customer portal this way is in early access. Orders, renewals and billing run on Subbly's platform, which has handled subscription billing since 2014.
On Subbly X, an MCP server lets AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code) work with your orders, subscriptions, customers and products.
