  1. Get your API key

    In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys, and generate a Private API key for Claude Code.

  2. Add the server

    --scope user makes Subbly available in every project. Leave it out to keep it to the current one.

  3. Check it's connected

    subbly should show as connected. Start a new session to load its tools, or run /mcp inside one.

Share it with your team

Commit a .mcp.json to your project instead. It holds no key: Claude Code reads each person's key from their own environment.

  2. Each person sets their own key

    Add it to your shell profile so every terminal has it. Claude Code asks you to approve the project's servers the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my Subbly API key for Claude Code?

In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys (https://www.subbly.co/admin/settings/api-keys). In the Private API keys card, choose Generate API key and copy it. Only the store owner and admins can create keys, and Subbly asks for two-factor authentication first. Give Claude Code its own key, so you can delete it without breaking anything else.

What's the difference between Claude Code and Claude?

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent: it runs in your terminal, IDE or the desktop app and can run commands and edit files. Claude is the chat app on the web, desktop and mobile. They keep separate MCP setups, so adding Subbly to one doesn't add it to the other. For Claude, follow the steps on our Claude page.

Should I use --scope user, project or the default?

Use --scope user to have Subbly in every project on your computer. The default (local) keeps it to the folder you're in. Use a committed .mcp.json (project scope) when a team shares a repo, with each person's key in their own SUBBLY_API_KEY.

Claude Code doesn't see the Subbly tools. What should I check?

Start a new session: servers load when a session starts. Run claude mcp list: if subbly shows Failed to connect, check the key has no space or line break at the end. In a .mcp.json the entry needs "type": "http", or Claude Code reads it as a local server and skips it. If the key was deleted in Subbly, generate a new one and add the server again.

Can Claude Code build my storefront?

Yes, in code. It can build a custom site that reads your products from Subbly and checks out with the SubblyCart.js widget or the Subbly.js SDK. If you'd rather not run your own site, your Subbly agent builds and hosts the store for you, checkout included.

Is it safe to give Claude Code my Subbly API key?

The key can read and change everything in your store, so treat it like a password and keep it out of files you share or commit. Claude Code asks before running a tool unless you allow it, and Subbly's tools tell the agent to confirm with you before archiving or deleting anything. If a key leaks, delete it under Settings, API keys, and it stops working straight away.

Can Claude Code build my website through Subbly's MCP server?

Not yet. The MCP server runs your store: products, plans, subscriptions, orders, customers and coupons. Your website is built by your Subbly agent: describe it in Subbly and it designs and builds the store, checkout included. Site editing through MCP is coming soon, so Claude Code will be able to change your pages too. Until then, Claude Code can build a custom storefront in code that checks out with the SubblyCart.js widget.
