Add it with one command
Run this in a terminal. It adds Subbly to the config file the Codex CLI, IDE extension and desktop app share.
Get your API key
In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys, and generate a Private API key. Paste it in the key field above to fill in the command.
Add the server
Terminalmkdir -p ~/.codex && cat >> ~/.codex/config.toml <<'EOF' [mcp_servers.subbly] url = "https://mcp.subbly.dev/mcp" http_headers = { "X-API-KEY" = "YOUR_SUBBLY_API_KEY" } EOFRestart Codex and check the connection
bashcodex mcp list
Or edit the config file
The Codex CLI, the IDE extension and the desktop app share one config file.
Get your API key
In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys, and generate a Private API key for Codex.
Add the server to your config
Create the file if it doesn't exist.
~/.codex/config.toml
toml[mcp_servers.subbly] url = "https://mcp.subbly.dev/mcp" http_headers = { "X-API-KEY" = "YOUR_SUBBLY_API_KEY" }Restart Codex and check the connection
bashcodex mcp list
Keep the key out of the file
Codex can read the key from an environment variable instead, so the config file holds no secret.
Point the header at a variable
~/.codex/config.toml
toml[mcp_servers.subbly] url = "https://mcp.subbly.dev/mcp" env_http_headers = { "X-API-KEY" = "SUBBLY_API_KEY" }Set the variable, then start Codex
bashexport SUBBLY_API_KEY="YOUR_SUBBLY_API_KEY" codex mcp list
Check it worked. Run codex mcp list and look for subbly, or type /mcp inside Codex. Then ask it to list your published products.
Why connect Codex to Subbly
Same setup in the CLI, IDE and app
Codex keeps one config for the CLI, the IDE extension and the desktop app, so Subbly is everywhere you use Codex.
Build against live store data
Codex reads your real plans and products while it builds your storefront or scripts, so prices and plans never drift.
Automate with codex exec
Run a Subbly prompt from a script or a scheduled job, like a morning check of orders that have waited too long to ship.
Try these with Codex
Once Subbly is connected, just describe what you want. Copy one to start, or use it as a starting point.
- 01
Morning check
Write a script I can run every morning with codex exec that lists Subbly orders waiting to ship for more than two days, oldest first.
- 02
Check the connection
List my published Subbly products with their prices.
- 03
Understand churn
Which Subbly subscriptions were cancelled in the last 30 days? Group them by cancellation reason and tell me what stands out.
- 04
Add a plan
Add a 3-month prepaid plan to my best-selling subscription, priced 10% below three monthly payments. Leave it unpublished so I can review it.
- 05
Run a promotion
Create a coupon called WELCOME15 for 15% off a customer's first order. Show me the settings before you save it.
- 06
Clear the shipping queue
Show me every order that is waiting to ship, oldest first, and flag any that have waited more than 3 days.

Built by Subbly
Describe your store. Your Subbly agent builds it.
Your website, checkout and customer portal are designed and built by your Subbly agent, around your brand. Site editing through MCP is coming soon, so the agent you already use will be able to change your pages too.
See what it buildsNot through MCP yet
Coming soon- Design or edit your website (your Subbly agent does that, and site editing through MCP is coming soon)
- Set up funnels, automations, dunning or the referral program
- Read analytics reports (it can pull the raw orders and subscriptions to work them out)
You set those up in your Subbly admin.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my Subbly API key for Codex?
In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys (https://www.subbly.co/admin/settings/api-keys). In the Private API keys card, choose Generate API key and copy it. Only the store owner and admins can create keys, and Subbly asks for two-factor authentication first. Give Codex its own key, so you can delete it without breaking anything else.
Is Codex the same as ChatGPT?
Both are made by OpenAI and sign in with your ChatGPT account. Codex is the coding agent (a CLI, an IDE extension and a desktop app) and it reads MCP servers from ~/.codex/config.toml. The ChatGPT desktop app reads the same file, so one setup covers both.
Why doesn't codex mcp add work with an API key?
codex mcp add sets up servers that sign in with OAuth. Subbly's server takes your API key in a header, which goes in config.toml as http_headers (or env_http_headers to read it from a variable).
Codex doesn't show the Subbly tools. What should I check?
Restart Codex: it reads the config when it starts. Check the file is ~/.codex/config.toml and the section is [mcp_servers.subbly]. If you used env_http_headers, start Codex from a terminal where SUBBLY_API_KEY is set.
Is it safe to give Codex my Subbly API key?
The key can read and change everything in your store, so treat it like a password and keep it out of files you share or commit. Codex asks before running a tool unless you allow it, and Subbly's tools tell the agent to confirm with you before archiving or deleting anything. If a key leaks, delete it under Settings, API keys, and it stops working straight away.
Can Codex build my website through Subbly's MCP server?
Not yet. The MCP server runs your store: products, plans, subscriptions, orders, customers and coupons. Your website is built by your Subbly agent: describe it in Subbly and it designs and builds the store, checkout included. Site editing through MCP is coming soon, so Codex will be able to change your pages too. Until then, Codex can build a custom storefront in code that checks out with the SubblyCart.js widget.
Which Subbly plans work with Codex?
Every plan includes the MCP server, with usage limits that depend on your plan.
