Set up Subbly’s MCP server in ChatGPT

Both sign in with your ChatGPT account and read the same config file. Run this one command in a terminal to add Subbly to it.
Get your API key
In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys, and generate a Private API key. Paste it in the key field above to fill in the command.
Add the server

In the ChatGPT desktop app, open Settings, then MCP servers: subbly is listed. In Codex, run codex mcp list.

In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys, and generate a Private API key for Codex.
Add the server to your config
Create the file if it doesn't exist.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT on the web connect to Subbly?
Not yet. ChatGPT on the web adds MCP servers that sign in with OAuth, and Subbly's server takes an API key today. Use the ChatGPT desktop app or Codex, which connect with your key through ~/.codex/config.toml.
Do I need ChatGPT developer mode?
Not for the desktop app or Codex: they read MCP servers from the config file. On the web, custom MCP servers that can change data need a Business or Enterprise plan, and Pro gets read-only tools.
Is ChatGPT the same as Codex?
Both are made by OpenAI and use your ChatGPT account. ChatGPT is the chat app; Codex is the coding agent. The ChatGPT desktop app, the Codex CLI and the IDE extension share one MCP config, so Subbly set up in one works in the others.
Where do I find my Subbly API key for ChatGPT?
In your Subbly admin, open Settings, then API keys (https://www.subbly.co/admin/settings/api-keys). In the Private API keys card, choose Generate API key and copy it. Only the store owner and admins can create keys, and Subbly asks for two-factor authentication first. Give ChatGPT its own key, so you can delete it without breaking anything else.
Is it safe to give ChatGPT my Subbly API key?
The key can read and change everything in your store, so treat it like a password and keep it out of files you share or commit. ChatGPT asks before running a tool unless you allow it, and Subbly's tools tell the agent to confirm with you before archiving or deleting anything. If a key leaks, delete it under Settings, API keys, and it stops working straight away.
Can ChatGPT build my website through Subbly's MCP server?
Not yet. The MCP server runs your store: products, plans, subscriptions, orders, customers and coupons. Your website is built by your Subbly agent: describe it in Subbly and it designs and builds the store, checkout included. Site editing through MCP is coming soon, so ChatGPT will be able to change your pages too.
